Geography Intent Statement

William De Yaxley’s Geography curriculum is designed to develop the children’s natural curiosity and inspire them to ask questions to clarify thinking and deepen understanding about the world in which they live  Our aim is equip the children with knowledge about the diverse places across the world, its people, its cultures as well as the physical and human characteristics which shape its social and economic environment.

Implementation

To ensure high standards of teaching and learning in geography, we implement a curriculum based up the 2014 Primary National Curriculum which provides a balanced and broad framework that is progressive throughout the whole school. Across the Key Stage, Geography is taught through a termly topic designed so that cross curricular links are made. This gives the subject a meaningful context for the learning and has the same importance as the core subjects. We strive to provide real life experiences through local visits so that the children can have a real sense of their heritage. These opportunities are also enhanced with residentials to Stibbington and Burwell which will bring learning to life and be fully inclusive to every child.

The Primary Knowledge Curriculum (PKC) Geography curriculum is being embedded within school, this approach is knowledge rich. This means the knowledge children will gain has been carefully specified, ordered coherently and builds over time. As children work through the geography curriculum they will know more, understand more about the world around them. A good geographical understanding relies on firm foundations of knowledge and skills. The skills this curriculum develops, like the knowledge, are specified, ordered coherently and progress over time. This curriculum structure helps pupils to deepen their understanding of physical and human geographical processes, fostering curiosity and fascination for the world we live in.
