Languages

The intention of the MFL curriculum at William De Yaxley Church of England Academy is that children are taught to develop an interest in learning another language in a way that is enjoyable and stimulating. We encourage children’s confidence and creative skills. We strive to stimulate and encourage children’s curiosity about the language. We help children develop their awareness of cultural differences in other countries and strive to embed the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills necessary to enable children to use and apply the language in a variety of contexts and lay the foundations for future language learning.

Implementation

Our MFL curriculum is designed to progressively develop children’s skills in the language, through regular taught lessons. Children progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary organised around topics. Children are encouraged and supported to develop their speaking and listening skills through conversational work, singing activities, games, registration and cultural traditions. As confidence and skills grow, children record their work through pictures, captions, worksheets, phrases, sentences, questions and eventually write a paragraph.

We use Oak Academy Scheme of work and can use resources from BCC Languages to teach Spanish through topic base units. Annually, we aim to have a Spanish Day to celebrate and raise engagement across the community with MFL. In cookery sessions, children will cook Spanish recipes and have a display of ingredients using the Spanish vocabulary.

Impact

The learning topics used, to plan and teach MFL, ensure that children are accessing work at age related expectations, with regular opportunities to be challenged through higher- level objectives. Children are assessed from the scheme of work that is linked to the unit taught and according to age related expectations in line with curriculum requirements. This is done in line with the school assessment calendar. This information is recorded and monitored by the co-ordinator. The coordinator will support teachers and listen to pupil voice in order to make some of the changes that may be necessary.

Here are some suggestions for ways you can help your child at home:

Cook a Spanish Meal

Familiarize your child with Spanish cuisine by having him or her help you cook traditional Spanish foods such as Gazpacho, jamon lberico, Calamari, Tortilla Espanola, Chorizo, Patatas Bravas, Paella and many more.
