Curriculum visits and enrichment activities

Bournemouth residential – In May (after the SAT’s), year 6 enjoy a well-deserved rest when they take a short break in Bournemouth. This is a fabulous opportunity for our year 6’s to relax and enjoy a tradition British seaside holiday with friends that many have been at school with since infant school.

During our stay we visit Monkey World, Beaulieau Palace, the Oceanarium and we have a day at Paulton’s Park where there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

We stay at a hotel which is very close to the beach, where we spend long summer evenings playing. The hotel allows us to enjoy sole occupancy while we are there so we are the only guests staying at the hotel. Prior to our stay, we ask the children what they would like to eat while they are away and the hotel always go above and beyond to ensure the children’s needs are met.

This is a truly memorable trip which allows our pupils to forge valuable and lasting memories of their final year at Junior School.

Harvest Tea – The children of year 6 began the new school year learning about how Christians celebrate the Harvest. We combined this with our current R.E theme of ‘Thankfulness’. To show how thankful we are for the bounty of the harvest we made scones from the flour that came from the wheat fields. The Year 6 pupils baked 300 scones! Children wrote invitations to their parents in English.

As scones do not require many ingredients, they were a popular tea-time treat during the war years which is our topic this term. Our annual Harvest Tea is an opportunity to share our new learning with parents and friends; to talk about what we have been doing so far this year and what better way to do it than over a cup of tea and something sweet.

The feedback was fabulous – we had 37 families join us, the comments you left were very much appreciated,

“Fantastic scones – well done to all the kids that helped make them.”
“Lovely idea thank you”
“Enjoyed spending time with my niece, scones lovely and tasty.”

Visit to Ely Cathdral – Year 6 attended Ely cathedral on Thursday 4th October along with 600 other children from schools across the Ely diocese. The day focused on remembering the fallen soldiers, particularly in World War 1, as this is the centenary year.

During the day we watched a play about the work of the Post Office service during World War 1 and how important it was for the morale of the troop to be able to send and receive letters with friends and family at home. Following this we took part in different workshops. Some children made poppies or silhouettes of soldiers which were added to a large display in the centre of the cathedral. Later some children learned about suffragettes and the role of women during the war and others learned about the kit and weapons carried by the soldiers.

At the end of the afternoon all of the schools gathered together around the central octagon for a remembrance service which was led by Bishop Stephen. At the end of this we heard the last post being played and poppy petals gently fell from the ceiling, one poppy for each soldier. It was a very moving experience.
