Science

Science is taught to all year groups, as they work through one scientific theme at a time. These lessons are based on the national curriculums statutory and non-statutory guidance. We feel it is necessary for the children to be able to widen their knowledge and understanding of this subject in any way possible.

Science gives children an opportunity to explore and discover what is in the universe around us and how these things work and have worked over centuries. It gives children a chance to question these facts in a way for them to develop a deeper understanding of a wide range of scientific ideas.

Over the course of the academic year the children will be exposed to a variety of topics and are given the opportunity to carry out experiments based upon these different areas; thus being given a chance to use other curricular subjects in the process, for example Maths. Further to this some year groups will have the opportunity to venture out on enrichment activities to go alongside their learning in the classroom.

Within our school, we are currently embedding the Primary Knowledge Curriculum Science curriculum which aims to equip children with the foundations for understanding the world through a scientific lens. The children are taught units of work that cover and go beyond the requirements of the National Curriculum in the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. They encounter people who have made significant contributions to the field of science over time, understanding that science has been a quest for understanding for many years, and will continue to be so in the future. The children will build a body of key foundational science knowledge as they work through the curriculum, asking questions and developing a sense of curiosity about the world around us.
